CIMPA Fellowships

Presentation

CIMPA Fellowships are grants enabling young mathematicians based in developing countries (according to the IMU classification ) to take part in thematic stays in research centres. These are exceptional opportunities to deepen one's area of expertise and to experience research within the international community in excellent conditions.

The calls are in partnership with the following research centres

  • The Bernoulli Center (Lausanne, Switzerland)
  • The Centre International de Rencontres Mathématiques (CIRM, Marseille, France)
  • The Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM, Barcelone, Spain)
  • L'Institut Henri Poincaré in Paris (IHP, Paris, France)
  • The Lie-Størmer Center (LSC, Tromsø, Norway)

Each programme has its own specific features, detailed in the partner centre tab below.

The CIMPA Fellowships are aimed at young mathematicians aged 36 or under or who have obtained their doctoral thesis within the last 5 years and are based in a developing country (as defined by the IMU classification). To benefit from the events, it is necessary to have a sufficient level of education (at least Master 2).

Candidates are expected to take part in the entire programme and never less than 2/3 of the total time (barring accidents).

Travel and subsistence (accommodation and per diems) are covered within the limits indicated for each programme below. Your travel costs will be reimbursed as soon as you arrive at the programme venue. This money, together with the money for per diems, is paid into an account specified by you.

Open calls can be found by consulting the activity map below. The financial conditions are listed in the tabs for each centre below.

Applications must then be submitted via the application site before the deadline indicated on the calls page. You will be asked to provide

  • an up-to-date CV highlighting the applicant's scientific training, in particular the courses taken at master's level and related to the theme of the stay (with detailed content and not just the title of the course), the subject of the master's or doctoral thesis or, if applicable, publications (with links to consult them) or any other relevant information to assess the applicant's ability to benefit from the activities during the programme.
  • a letter of motivation. Any generic phrase such as ‘I have always loved mathematics’ or ‘this research stay will be a great help to me in my future career’ is a disservice to your application. On the contrary, concrete arguments showing your interest or the benefits you will derive from the stay will be appreciated.
  • up to two letters of recommendation will be requested directly from referees. You will, of course, need to obtain these people's agreement beforehand.
  • Depending on the type of stay, it may be necessary to include a research project. This will be specified if this is the case.

Applications are examined by the event organisers and you will be notified of the result by a letter from CIMPA in the weeks following the deadline.

Candidates are advised not to wait until the deadline to apply and to ask their referees to send their letter well before the application deadline.

Once you have read carefully the information above and decided which programme you are interested in, go to the application website, create an account (if it is not already done) and apply tot the event. Be aware that you will be redirected to another website.
