CIMPA-ICTP Research in Pairs

Presentation

The CIMPA-ICTP « Research in Pairs » fellowship programme enables mathematics researchers based in a developing country to come to Europe to collaborate with a colleague. The two people are expected to work together on a well-supported research project, mainly in the European colleague's institute.

The assessment will of course be based on the presentation and quality of the scientific project, and on the relevance of the collaboration between the two colleagues. In addition to these criteria, applications from colleagues who are scientifically active despite a difficult environment and/or heavy teaching, supervisory or administrative duties, and who have not had many opportunities to travel internationally over the last 5 years, are particularly welcome.

During his or her stay in Europe, the laureatevwill record/broadcast a mini-course (approximately 8 hours, in French or English) on a mathematics subject at Masters level. Please note that this is an important part of the application, as this recording will become an exemplary course for all students wishing to learn more about this subject. It must therefore be prepared with the utmost care. This course will be recorded for a week in Nice, ICTP or another possible research centre, usually at the end of the period of collaboration with the host.

This experience is often viewed very positively by the laureate. As well as providing re-usable teaching material, it gives international visibility to the colleague and his or her themes.

The courses are saved and made available to the public free of charge on the carmin.tv platform.

CIMPA-ICTP Research in Pairs is a collaboration between

colleagues based in developing countries (as defined by the IMU classification).  The candidate has defended his/her doctoral thesis at least 3 years ago (date of defence ≥ date of application -3) and has been actively employed in an academic institution in one or more developing countries over the last 5 years at the time of application. This period may include a thesis or post-doctoral course.

a European colleague, a researcher holding a doctorate in mathematics who will be based, for the duration of the candidate's stay, in one of the following countries: France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain and Switzerland.

Around ten candidates are selected each year.

The maximum grant is €10,000, with an average expenditure of €6,000 per winner.

Alone or in conjunction with other grants, this support must cover all expenses (transport, accommodation, insurance, visa, etc.) for the laureate for the duration of the visit. The amount is determined according to the duration and location of the visit (see the pdf version of the file to be completed for further details). It can only cover her personal expenses. The minimum duration of the stay is 5 weeks of collaboration with the host at her institute, to which must be added one week for the recording/broadcasting of 8-hour mini-courses.

The application form will be filled in by the applicant from the developing country in collaboration with the host.

A PDF version of this form is available, containing the fields to be completed as well as further details on the terms and conditions.

During the submission process, an email will be sent to the host requesting further details and uploading a letter of support for the application. Please note that the letter is of crucial importance in assessing the host's commitment and the success of the application.  An application without a letter will not be assessed.

If your country does not appear in this list and you feel that the specifics of your location or career should be taken into consideration, please write to director@cimpa.info explaining your reasons and we will let you know if you can proceed further.
