We are excited to share that, in furtherance of its mission of promoting research in mathematics
with developing countries, CIMPA is now launching a mentoring program.
As a first step, we invite members of our community to become mentors.
A substantial proportion of students and early‑career researchers, particularly those based in low- and
middle-income countries, encounter significant barriers to accessing structured academic mentoring.
These obstacles encompass insufficient supervision and coaching in the preparation of letters of
motivation, the development of academically oriented curricula vitae, the drafting and submission
of scientific manuscripts, the preparation of competitive grant applications, and the acquisition of familiarity
with internationally recognized academic norms, practices, and standards, aside from significant hurdles in
making connections to researchers in their area.
These difficulties are often reinforced by:
- language barriers,
- lack of local academic networks,
- cultural differences in communication and academic expectations,
- limited access to experienced mentors,
- insufficient exposure to international research environments.
A mentoring program based on scientific, regional proximity, shared language, and
cultural understanding can significantly improve confidence, communication, and long-term academic success.
Our program aims to create a sustainable mentoring ecosystem that connects students
and young researchers with mentors from the same topic, geographical, and linguistic regions.
Becoming a mentor means supporting the next generation of researchers and helping build an inclusive, supportive mathematical sciences community.
Mentors commit for one year, renewable by mutual agreement.
They meet virtually with their mentee for about one hour each month for scientific exchange, career guidance, encouragement, and professional development, and may also offer occasional feedback on manuscripts, CVs, applications, research proposals, and other professional materials. Mentors are encouraged to join online mentoring workshops and activities when possible.
When feasible, they are also encouraged to meet their mentee in person at a CIMPA event to strengthen the relationship, deepen scientific discussions, and connect with the broader CIMPA community.
